MHAV hosted its first advocacy focus group in 2013. Graduates of our Consumer Empowerment and Leadership Training (CELT) conferences were joined by other concerned Virginians and discussed difficult issues, including gaps in mental health services, struggles with improper medicating, and facing stigma when advocating for your own care. MHAV’s Public Policy Committee Chair Ali Faruk facilitated these discussions, and we also had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Lynn Sanders from the University of Virginia to discuss solutions and brainstorm advocacy talking points.
